color deposit due to stainless steel quality?

we have a six-stage iron phosphating proccess. and I´ve seen color variations in coated parts even when their are at a distance of 15 inches. I suppose it is due to variations in quality and/or compositions in cold rolled stainless steel.

 Can you guide me with this? where can I have information (link or book, whatever) to learn about this.
