Re: Spec for Pretreatment of Hot & Cold Rolled Steel ? [ Started by thefinishingline in Industrial Cleaning : 2 replies ]

Technically there is no industry standard specification for pretreatment. The standards that are most common are from a specific industry, ie military, federal, and heavy equipment, etc..

If your customer would like to create their own specs, it can be done. I have listed some spec examples below:

Federal: TT490E Chemical Conversion Coatings and Pretreatments for Ferrous Surfaces

Military. MIL: DTL 5541F Chemical Conversion Coatings on Aluminum Alloys

Caterpillar: 1E4093, CHG NO 07, 2-7-2008 Paint-Phosphate Pretreatment Chemicals for Metallic Substrates.

Hope this helps

Re: Small Parts [ Started by Hockytwn13 in Powder Coating : 1 replies ]

Hockytwn13,

It's tough when it comes to painting small parts. Especially ones that need to be powder coated. With wet paint, an immersion pretreatment and paint system would work great because there is no overspray, however with powder, the smaller the part, the more the overspray. And without a excellent recliam system, a lot of powder will get waisted.

I would look for a gun with as small a deflecter as possible with a slot that would be ideal for the size part you are painting.

With regards to the preparation of the part before paint, an immersion (dip/soak) process would be ideal. A wand would probabaly blow the parts around with the high pressure, and an in line system would probabaly be overkill.

hope this helps

Topic: EnviroServe's low BOD/COD level cleaner [ Started by ChemSlinger in Industry News : 0 replies ]

EnviroSeve Chemicals has developed a new low BOD/COD cleaner for spray wands and immersion/dip tanks.

One particular NC county was overly strict on water discharge. The BOD limit was 500 and the COD limit was 2500. After thousands of dollars in fines, our lab was called to lend a helping hand. EnviroClean 3031 was developed to reduce the BOD and COD levels of the out going water. The final test from an outside testing labratory reported that the BOD levels went from 1500 down to 340 and the COD levels went from 56,000 to only 800.

For more information about EnviroClean 3031, please contact Chris Klingenberg-R&D Director and the developer of this product. (9 …

EnviroServe Chemicals' Phosphate Free Conversion Coatings are a Big Hit!

Several large manufacturers are so impressed with the new EnviroKote technology conversion coating program that they have decided to use it corporate wide.

  • Phosphate Free allows for a reduction in waste ( a big deal for the companies who are trying to go "zero waste")
  • Less contact time on the part allows for an increase in line speed giving the ability to increase production.
  • Ambient tempratures have saved an average of 75% in energy costs.
  • Better salt spray results prevent failures in the field and allow product guarantees.

Re: Pretreatment process for Steel [ Started by unique1 in Industrial Cleaning : 3 replies ]

Unique 1,

Unfortunately, using the phosphate directly behind the degreaser will not do well. A clean rinse is very important.

A good process would be:

Clean/degrease

fresh water rinse

phosphate 30-60 seconds

fresh water rinse

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you need any help getting the right chemicals in your facility. Good luck.

I agree with DustinGebhardt. Usually an acidic vibratory compound or a chemical de-burrer will get rid of the roughness and bring the part to a nice polished shine.

Re: Powder coating galvanized overhead hwy. sign structure [ Started by hedger in Powder Coating : 3 replies ]

hedger,

The pinholing could likely be caused by a small amount of soil on the surface of the part, or either the paint was not cured enough.

The most common procedure out there is as follows:

Clean

Rinse

Prepare Surface (ie iron phosphate, zirconium coating, etc)

Rinse

Seal (optional depending on the process)

Dry Off (you should see a nice "sheet" look as the part dries, no water beads)

Paint

Cure (Cure time and temp will depend on paint)

The steps above are the formula for a very clean, long lasting, powder coated part.

Hope this helps

Re: What will be the adequate pretreatment on G.I. substrate before powder [ Started by sudhir in Industrial Cleaning : 4 replies ]

The chemical application will work for either a dip/immersion or a spray washer / spray wand.

A good cleaner/iron phosphate should be used at a concentration from 2-4% with a pH level of 3.5-5.0. One of our best cleaner/iron phosphate products for spray washers is our EnviroPhos 2283. This is a multi-metal safe product that gives good adhesion and coating weights. I'll send you the TDS for it.

Re: What will be the adequate pretreatment on G.I. substrate before powder [ Started by sudhir in Industrial Cleaning : 4 replies ]

Sudhir,

Instead of using a straight alkaline cleaner for the first stage, I would recommend a good cleaner/phosphatizer combination, followed by a clean rinse, then dry and paint. The cleaner/phosphatizer reacts with the metal creating a greater surface area for the paint to adhere. This process is very common with aluminum and galvanized substrates in the powder coating industry.

EnviroServe Chemicals, Inc. has everything you need on the chemical end to get you the proper results. Please give us a call if you would like to talk further about your process and some possible solutions.

Thanks,

thibshman,

EnviroServe Chemicals, Inc. has been providing the aluminum powder coating industry with high quality pretreatment chemicals and processes for many years.

I recommend a good alkaline cleaner to remove soils from the metal surface, followed by a clean rinse. The conversion coating that I would recommend is our Low Temp Conversion Coating. This product is environmentally safe, and requires less contact time. A rinse is also needed after this step.

These chemicals are providing up to 3000+ salt spray hours with ratings of 8 and 9. Our article in this forum can be found in the Industrial Cleaning Section and will give you so much valuable information.

What type of pretreatment was applied to the part before they were painted? If it was done chemically, what was the process in which the chemical were applied to the part? (spray washer, pressure washer, or immersion)

Were the 6 parts treated and painted at the same time (during the same run)?

Re: Hook Material Options [ Started by cprendergast in Powder Coating : 2 replies ]

Teflon may not be a bad idea, I have never actually seen it done, but that doesn't mean it can't be.

Have you considered chemical stripping?

Usually in house stripping can save you money in the long run do to the fact that the stripper can be used multiple times on multiple batches of hooks as long as the spent paint is properly filtered out.

Hope this helps!
