Topic: Reducing metal content in Nitric Acid

First post! This forum is great.

I use nitric acid to strip old plating from aluminum parts, and am concerned about building up too much copper and nickel in the nitric acid. Is there a way to remove the metal for the acid (such as by plating it out)? I'm concerned about the effectiveness of stripping if it gets to high, disposal for a spent solution, and the price to replace the solution. I've tried MetalX strippers, but the nitric works much faster, and prepares the aluminum for the next process of zincating.

Thanks in advanced.

Woodjames,

I am not sure if there is a ion exchange resin for this application but that seems to be what you are looking for. I used to work at a shop and we had a nitric rack strip in the system when the nickel content got to its limits we would contact a recycler to reclaim the nickel and would bring us fresh nitric, this may be an avenue to explore but that was a three thousand gallon tank. I am not aware of a way to plate it out but there could be I suppose.

I've used Pro-pHx for this exact application a few years ago and it worked great. It precipitated the metals, which I then filtered out with a simple tube filter. The acid was never dumped. Only routine maintenance adds were required due to drag-out. It was expensive to initially purchase, but it paid off very quickly. I highly recommend Pro-pHx.

Thanks for the info guys! I just sent an email to Pro-phx for a distributor in my area. Sounds perfect for my application.

Thanks again.
