Topic: Bussing, Tank, and Parts become Magnetized

I just saw this phenomenon first hand and can’t seem to find anyone else who has seen it before.

On a return type machine, around the electro-clean tanks there is a magnetic field present on the rectifier, bussing, the steel EC tank, and on the parts as well.

Has anyone else out there witnessed this before? Any ideas on the cause?

Basic physics states that magnetic and electric fields are related. They run perpendicular to each other.

Therefore, if you have electricity (as you would in an electrocleaner), you will have magnetism.

Or did you mean something else?

Looking around, I see that vibrating a part while it is exposed to DC can cause the part to take on a magnetic moment.

Also, if the part is near any type of spiral of wires or other electrically active source. So, if your bussing goes around the tank before making a contact, it could be imparting a magnetic moment on the parts.

You can also get a cheap device to check for magnetism. I'm pretty sure a simple magnetic stud finder (for finding hidden fasteners in the walls of your home) could be used.
